I can remember hearing this solo as a kid and immediately having to go learn it. Even though I’ve known how to play this for years, this is the first time I finally sat down and really studied the studio recording. I did the best I could to get it accurate.
One thing I didn’t get exactly right was the last pull-off in measure 40. Old habits die hard, and out of instinct I picked the 16–14 notes instead of pulling them off like Brian May does. Also, during the studio versions outro solo, you can hear a bit of finger noise in the last few licks on the original recording that I don’t think I managed to recreate.
Most of this arrangement is my interpretation of the vocal melody. I like filling in some of the empty space to make it more fun and enjoyable to play while still staying true to the song. The guitar I’m using is a more affordable Chinese-made model, but I changed all of the pickup switch settings to match the original. There are so many switch combinations on Brian May’s guitar, and it’s surprisingly difficult to find reliable information on the exact settings he used.
Most of the live footage is too low in quality to clearly see where all of the switches are positioned.
