Lucretia

By: Megadeth

Super cool song from Rust in Peace with two monster solos.

It’s so hard getting Marty Friedman’s feel. In between hard parts are always these super melodic and nuanced lines. I guess that’s what makes Marty one of the best. Dave follows it up with a super aggressive solo with a few button masher licks that are very hard to replicate 100%. That doesn’t mean they don’t sound great though.

In measure 14, I used a 31/32 time signature. I’ve also seen this section transcribed as 15/16 and other variations. I realize 31/32 sounds like a ridiculous signature to count, but I wanted to stay as faithful as possible to the feel of the recording. I grid tested the passage in my DAW, and the closest time signature I could arrive at without compromising the timing was 31/32. I know that may seem far fetched, but that’s where the math led me.

I also want to clarify that Jason’s primary focus is the guitar performance, while my focus is the tab editing and transcription side of things, so there are a few extra details about the video worth mentioning.

  • For example, in measure 1 you’ll see palm muting indicated on the 5th string. Jason doesn’t mute those notes as heavily as Marty and Dave do on the original recording, but we decided to leave the notation in place to better reflect the source material.
  • In measure 5, it initially sounded to me as though Jason picked the notes on the 6th and 7th frets of the G string, so they were first tabbed that way. After going back to the original track and listening more closely, it became clear that the notes are actually played as a hammer on, so the tab was adjusted accordingly.
  • In measure 70, there’s an additional note on the 19th fret of the B string played over the C#5 chord in the background. Marty doesn’t play that note on the original recording. Jason added it in the moment during his performance, and we chose to leave it in as part of his interpretation rather than remove it from the tab.

Tone Screenshots

Here are some of my screenshots, so that you can see exactly how I achieved my Lucretia guitar tones. I matching the solo and rhythm section tones from the Megadeth recording as closely as possible. Patrons can reach out with any tone questions you may have.

Isolated TRACKS (mp3)

Here are the drums, bass and other background tracks to jam along to Lucretia. I've also included all of my isolated guitar tracks in case you really want to hear what's going on. Isolated tracks are normally very difficult to find online, and can be very helpful in cracking a difficult solo tab.
